educate me, /yuri/ggas that actually own a bike. Should I actually buy a scooter/motorcycle? I figure it should be much easier to maintain than a car, and the gas mileage is better. Your first bike should be cheap, used, and preferable with a couple of scratches. Why? Because inevitably you'll scratch or dent it somehow. It's a rite of passage. This way you don't feel so bad about it.
>Maintenance is just different
Maintenance on a bike is about the same on a new car. Gas, oil, chain, and pay attention if anything shows signs of not working right. Unlike a car you may find yourself compelled to fix problems yourself right away. Also don't buy a Chinese bike. You will break down. /o/ will belittle you. You will deserve every bad thing that happens to you.
>Mileage is better
My Yamaha FZ07 consistently gets about 70MPG +/- 2MPG. My car is a consistent 28. The difference in fuel is not quite enough to cover the cost of insurance for the bike per year. I lose a little money riding it every summer. This would change if I rode more.

Thanks for the reply, and that is literally where I live. I fear methheads with pickups, hah. I'm used to doing all the car maintenance myself by now since I've had to maintain 4 of them for family and friends. There are certain things like hoisting the engine that I never want to do on a full-size vehicle, but a bike seems like it would be fully maintainable to my naive brain. I probably do need to actually educate myself on it first though
