I was confused about this because being an American that's what I know and being a weeb I'm familiar enough with Japan's. Basically, college in Canada means like a one or two year program to prepare you for a job I guess kind of like community college while university is typical 4 year for a degree thing. You don't have to go to college before going to university but some do.

This gets even more confusing later because Liz finishes 12th grade in 1998 and there's a graduation and everything... only to go to high school for another year before leaving for university in 1999. Apparently in Ontario specifically, 13th grade (renamed OAC after 1988) was a thing up until 2003. Basically it was a way of earning some extra credits and prepping for university I guess and while it technically wasn't required to attend, it was if you wanted to attend university in Ontario and you were kind of looked down on if you didn't do it. Liz is 17 when she finishes 12th grade and 18 when she leaves home. Michael was 18 when he finished high school as well so I assume he did it too.>>145319004

I think the problem is more that Elly is just kind of forcing it on the rest of her family because she's insecure about her body and and getting older. I don't know, I just find her to be a pretty bad shit character who comes off as more than a little self-absorbed at times, especially compared to John who seems more of a go with the flow kind of guy, has enough of an inner child to know how to have fun and connect with his kids and be a dad without being overbearing, enjoys his hobbies and has professional success.I think the problem is that Elly is Lynn, so she comes with Lynn's own internal baggage.
