I'm picturing that "correction" spreading further than just where Nero intended. Much further. To the team sent back to correct the correction, sure, but then somehow effecting the rest of Chaldea, rando civilians, Nero herself...
I'm picturing the transformation happening like that scene in Looper, where the guy's past self is getting cut into pieces so his future self is just spontaneously falling apart. They feel something odd, their finger falls off, they feel their tit and it's turned to rubber, it happens piece by piece without any explanation, and they're just confused and panicked until the memories start coming "back" to them, forgetting things and remembering an entire lifetime of getting raped and abused as a sex toy...
It'd work especially with with Nero herself. This is her scheme, so she'd recognize what's happening quickly, if not why, and be extra-horrified as she realizes what's happening and what's going to happen to her.

A key point is the memory replacement taking much longer than the physical transformation. Turning to plastic is relatively quick, getting fucked for decades takes time. So when they're getting raped in the present, they're also remembering themselves getting raped in the past.
