Same $300-400 range, what can I buy that isn't complete trash and should at least last a few years? I expect it to be used a lot for hemming denim, probably less for wholesale creation. Do not buy someone a sewing machine as a gift without their input. It's a really personal thing, and the last thing you want is to spend $400 on something when they wanted a different one. Find an actual shop near you and see if they can do a gift card for you, they'll make sure whatever they choose is set up and good to go. That also gives them the option to have your 400 go towards a machine, then they can contribute a bit more and potentially get something more desirable.
