Practically every high end trek, specialized, etc, will be made in the same taiwanese mega factories by Giant or Merida.
It doesn't mean that all bicycles are the same or that brands of bicycles are redundant just because they contract production and have corporate overlords.

I hate surly haters, they are unique and clever bikes from a company that I would genuinely be sad to see go under/genericize. But I hate surly fans even more, you see the retarded shit they post? Paragraphs and paragraphs of nonsense and they haven’t even mentioned the actual bike or it’s BB5’s even once, that’s why nobody takes these guys seriously, they somehow know how many times a surly chainstay has been re-welded in the backwoods of Laos, but they never know anything about any bicycles, it reeks of noob trap and lifestyle signaling. It's more than just that. Most steel frames are literally straight from the maxway catalog with no design input at all.. There are times that you could get the exact frames sold by Surly from Bikesdirect when they're in a tourer mood. Sometimes overrrunds or paint blems.

Now there ARE unique designs from trek, specialized and yes, Surly. But lets not confuse the design work put into a Shiv vs a shitheap fx commuter and give design credit to exactly where the design is made.

And lets talk QC. That's not one of Surly's strengths because they're heavily relying on LBSes to do quite a bit of the inspection as QBP. it's probably one of the reasons why their completes are speced kind of shitty, especially for the price. They want to drive custom builds. Their tolerance for shitty looking welds and mediocre paint is not that great for the price.

hollowtek has cartridge bearings inside the external parts, you can't service them you just throw the whole bb out. wasteful but much easier to "work on ", you don't work on them at all.>>2030387
nice work. they say that spraypaint weakens the plastic but on bike helmets the plastic just keeps the foam from getting scraped off, it doesn't actually protect your head like a skateboard helmet. and even if you sprayed a skateboard helmet, it'd probably be fine, it's probably just a lawyer thing they're required to say.>>2030524
a "northroads" style bar is made by practically every single bar maker but the cheapest one is by Sunlite in steel.

could be an issue, could be the existing stem is too long with the existing bars for your particular reach. I swapped out drops for swept but my old bike had a long stem and it worked better with the swept for me.>>2030576
you probably have more people nowadays who pry the seals on external bearing bbs and try to get grease into them, than who actually service cup and cone square taper rather than just swapping cartridge units.
