Is it a bad idea to use gas hood struts with a carbon fiber hood?>>28166223
Why would it be?>>28166247
nta, but carbon fiber can crack>>28166247
because gas struts are designed to lift the weight of a stock hood, and carbon fiber is very brittle compared to steel, so applying an unnecessary high amount of concentrated pressure might lead to cracking.>>28166265
>>28166263
Do you even understand what damping is? A gas strut isn't going to just rocket the hood open so fast something breaks.>>28166328
Do you understand what a small area of concentrated pressure is? When shutting the hood, you need to apply enough downward pressure to overcome the struts, and that is all concentrated on two single points on the brittle carbon fiber hood. It's the same reason that old box Chevy hoods bending is a common issue.>>28166328
depending on how much heavier the stock hood is, struts meant for an oem hood very well could rocket the hood open faster than it should, but the bigger problem is closing it.

>the problem is the weight needed to "activate" the shock in order to go down. because the hood weighs little, you cant push it down, it will just bend where the shocks are.

>I've been running with a Seibon CF hood for the last 6 months and using the stock hood struts. They work, but not perfectly. If the hood isn't pulled down evenly, you'll hear a pop due to the hood flexing. It somehow sounds like a bond breaking.

Struts for carbon fiber hoods are lower pressure. Is buying a Ford Focus 2015 with the powershift as my first car a shoot to my feet? Its quite cheap in my third world country and actually love the design. I know the DSP6 powershift has its problems but its something I could stand considering all the other benefits (equipments, assits, security).>>28166721

Steel hoods aren’t just a piece of sheet metal. There’s always some sort of frame underneath the think sheet metal skin on the surface. I would think any carbon fiber hood with a place for the struts to mount would have a frame of some sorts.>>28166836
You can run stock gas struts with a carbon hood if you want. I'll go with companies that make hoods and struts and the collective knowledge of the internet that says its a bad idea that will lead to cracking your expensive hood.>>28166840
If the hood is light and has a bar to prop it open, then who cares about the struts, but then you need to make sure the fittment on the actual latch is nice and tight so it’s not bouncing around.>>28166841

Struts are nice because they're out of the way
