SUGI: A Low-Poly Animated ShortE

I got the idea to make this animation based on something really cool that I found. A friend of mine, Ziggy Cashmere, made a YouTube documentary about the insane production behind the infamously terrible animated film, Foodfight! Among all the things he recovered from the movie's production were several 3D models from the original version of the movie that was being made before the director restarted production.

Long story short, he recovered a few models of characters that never appeared in the movie, and two of them caught my eye for how adorable they looked: Sugi.lwo, and Anime Zombie.lwo. I knew the character designs had the potential for a cool animation, so I decided to make a really quick animation of Sugi beating up a horde of anime zombies for Newgrounds Low-Poly Day. Despite using pre-made motion capture animations from Mixamo, the process of making this took a lot more out of me than I thought, but I think the end result has the potential for me to explore more stories with these characters if people like them.

Huge thanks to Ubern for his incredible work on the city background, which was also a model from Foodfight! Check out his awesome 3D animations here: https://www.youtube.com/@ubern00bkye

Also I have to give a special shoutout to Jiji, a friend of a friend, who gave me permission to use his track "Speedrun" as the soundtrack for this animation. I know it wouldn't have been nearly as authentic without a distinctive Y2K techno beat. Give it a listen on YouTube here, and check out his other music while you're at it: https://youtube.com/@__jebbe
