Artfight 2026 Slideshow Finale!

Fully-clothed SFW sticks! While writing this commentary, though, I thought maybe all "nude" stickmen are just wearing clothes the same color as their skin? Very thought-provoking stuff... I want to try making these backgrounds somewhat abstract, before you ask why they're in a fricken' frozen cave thing.

This example shows the use of Pixel Bender to dither an image in Flash.

Abstract:Adobe Pixel Bender was created by Adobe Systems and released in 2008. It was initially added to Adobe Flash Player 10, which was the first version to support Pixel Bender-powered filters and effects. However Adobe began to shift its focus towards other technologies and deprecated Pixel Bender in favor of move time and effort into the Stage3D and AGAL. The specific date of obsolescence may vary based on Adobe's updates and announcements, but generally, it fell out of active use in the mid-2010s. I do recall working with pixel bender kernels a little bit, Away3D made really good use of them before Stage3D and other Flash Player 11 commodities were added. A friend of mine would use the kernel for large data processing since the filters and sharers would run asynchronously, with the proof of concept resembling OpenCL usages. NOTE: I could not get Adobe Pixel Bender Toolkit running in Windows 10 or 11, I had to use VirtualBox to emulate Windows 7. Controls:

None

Bugs:

Here's an animated music video I made as a final project for my abstract animation class.

Shiver and Frostbite - Chill Vibes

The villainous Dr. Robotnik confronts Sonic about his frustrations.

v1.0 — Initial release. Used chroma key to separate animation from backgrounds.v.1.1 — Used alpha channel instead of chroma key. Green line art artifacts removed.v1.2 — Added SWF version. Fixed minor color mistakes for SWF version only. COMMENTARYI started this project thinking, “Oh, yeah, I know exactly how to draw AoStH Robotnik; I don’t need to use reference!” And then every frame looked like shit. So, I went online and referred to the show itself and these two pieces of concept art by character designer Milton Knight. A good lesson in humility. I accomplished a good chunk of animation on a livestream, but the stream was struck down because I played episodes of Adventures of Sonic for my friends to watch thinking nothing would come of it. Maybe I should stream on Twitch or Picarto, accounts where I don’t really care whether they live or die. It’s a darn shame because that stream was a lot of fun! DoodleDemon and I started calling each other “blithering buckets of bolts” and watched Robotnik do a Nazi salute and that was absolutely hilarious. The show itself is a lot of fun. It’s stupid fun. Every moment Robotnik is on screen is a good time. Scratch and Grounder are great, as well. The team that worked on it—including Milton Knight, the voice actor Long John Baldry (1940–2005 R.I.P.), and the storyboard artists (including Scott Shaw! From the early Archie Sonic comics)—did a fantastic job given the limitations they worked with. Overall, I definitely prefer SatAM over AoStH, but they are both very different genres of animation. While I was working on this project, Milton Knight leaked on Facebook that Diskotech would be doing an Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog complete series release on Blu-ray and that it would contain new interviews with him. I had hoped that the release would be in HD given that it is Blu-ray and not DVD, but it was very unlikely whoever owned the rights to the show kept the film masters and only kept the master tapes, which inherently have a lower resolution. Later that year, Diskotech officially announced the complete series on Twitter. I am absolutely going to pre-order it. It comes out February 2022. If they ever release the SatAM complete series on Blu-ray (in full HD, knock on wood), I will die a happy man. Now that I think about it, I’m known by all my friends for being a huge Sonic fan, so it’s weird that it took until now for me to make a proper Sonic cartoon. This project started as a gift for MatterBoar. I felt bad that the previous animation I made for him was released in November 2020, 13 months ago, and I hadn’t made any new ones in that time. So I secretly started this one and originally intended to give it to him for free. He asked me if I was available for new animation work and I told him about this side project and he said he’d buy it! The deadline was Christmas Day. The night before, I promised myself I would work on this cartoon until it is 100% ready to release. I thought it would take maybe three hours. It ended up taking 22 hours straight. I only took three hour-long breaks to rest my hands and get a half-hour of sleep. A single cup of hot chocolate coffee got me through it! The thing that took the longest in this particular long stretch was the shot of Robotnik running in place. That took forever! I probably could have done this quicker, but I wanted to make sure each and every frame was cleaned up. I do not envy the animators of the original show. Despite how simple Robotnik’s character design looks, animating him takes a long time, especially compared to Sonic. Robotnik’s mustache and yellow jumpsuit straps in particular were very troublesome, as well as layering the different body parts. The most frustrating thing with Sonic was doing his baby blue highlights. Thankfully, Sonic hardly moves in this cartoon. (That’s kinda uncharacteristic of Sonic, but hey I’m not complaining!) I wanted to add some traditional paint-like motion blur to some of the snappier movements, but due to the deadline—and me just wanting to move on to something new—I could not do it in time. The tight shot of Robotnik’s face at the end was also supposed to be painterly, similar to the gross-out shots in SpongeBob and Ren and Stimpy, but after I took a crack at it in Clip Studio Paint, I couldn’t do it. Also, I felt that a rendered painting of a character wouldn’t fit a parody that tried to match the art style of the original show. Pre-production began in August 2021 and post-production ended on Saturday, December 25th. Normally, a 26-second-long cartoon wouldn’t take that long, but due to a myriad of continuous financial problems and setbacks, it took four months to complete. It probably would have had a better start if I had started by making storyboards. I run-and-gunned this whole cartoon and I definitely regret it. I ended up making last-minute changes to the character poses, facial expressions, etc., which isn’t something you really want to be doing a lot with deadlines involved. You want to make confident decisions in the beginning so that the changes later on will hopefully be few in number. Ordinarily, I would not do this slapdash approach with a commission. But this started out as a gift and turned into a commission later. Regardless, even quick, shoddy storyboards would have gone a long way! Lesson learned. Originally, I was going to commission my friend Dyoudi Mitimasa (@epicfunnyhahajokelol) do the background art. He is a natural at this kind of sharp, abstract art style. However, I did not have the money to commission an artist, especially at the time. So instead, I leave you with a huge recommendation to go check out Dyoudi’s art! He’s a wonderful artist and a wonderful person! Additionally, Milton Knight is still an active artist and has a Patreon! Go support him, too! I made this background art by referencing two screenshots from the show, shown in the timelapse video. At first, I was very happy with this art, especially since it was my first real attempt at abstract art. The reference really helped! But once I put it in the cartoon, something was wrong. Robotnik’s design is mostly warm colors. The background is mostly warm colors. I feel this leads to a lot of Robotnik’s movements being less readable than they should. Sonic is fine since he’s blue, orange’s complement. If I had to do the background art again, I would divide the composition into two sections: a cool section for Robotnik and a warm section for Sonic. CLIENTMatterBoar ANIMATION / BACKGROUND ART / EDITINGAlexander Emenheiser @ade-syndicate BACKGROUND MUSICDr. Robotnik's ThemeComposed by Reed Robbins and Mark SimonCover by Turret 3471 Main Title ThemeComposed by Clark GassmanIncludes motifs fromSonic 2 Title Theme and Emerald Hill Zone composed by Masato Nakamura,In the Hall of the Mountain King composed by Edvard Grieg, and Flight of the Bumblebee composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov AUDIO TAKEN FROMOneyPlays Sonic Robo Blast 2 - FINALEwith @Oney, Ding Dong, and JulianEdited by Dex the Swede FONTSPedro SPECIAL THANKS AND PATREON SUPPORTERSAnimation stream viewers, including DoodleDemon, for keeping me companyMilton Knight for being nice when I talked to him :)@SuprDee2 for being supportiveand giving me a new version of Toon BoomDyoudi Mitimasa @epicfunnyhahajokelol PATREON & KO-FI SUPPORTERSAleahAshleyFroggyDuwudeViktor Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog © SEGA, DIC Entertainment 1993 P.S. — I’m working on a new project right now!
