Franklin has an idea to get more money in the shop

Well here we are with the third short! This one was a lot of fun to work on this past week. I'll go into more details below as there will be spoilers if you haven't watched it yet. But thank you so much for the support! Newgrounds saw potential in the first episode and gave it a front page position. Truly thankful for that opportunity, and i'm really happy that the short has found some fans. I've been receiving some great messages and really am enjoying meeting others in the indie animation scene. OK, on with the the details. Spoilers from this point on. THE STORYThis third short is based on true events. I was out celebrating a friends birthday and there was an arcade, a claw machine contained these capybara toys, I just really wanted to win one but the machine wouldn't hand it over. My partner decided she would make it her mission to get it for me and i'm happy to say she returned to the arcade the next day and did get it as a surprise, and i'm now a proud owner of a capybara holding a smiling pineapple. FRANKLINWe saw Franklin in the 2nd short briefly. But this time he's made his debut. Franklin is a positive happy guy that just wants to help in anyway he can.. sometimes, he makes mistakes but that's ok. I find BIG characters are a fun contrast to the smallness of Thalia. Having a range of character sizes makes for a more visually dynamic cast and I love how Franklin is essentially Frankenstiens monster wearing bowling shirts and sandals. He's a lovable dude and I can't wait to make more with him. WRITING COMEDYProbably the hardest thing to write because it's just so subjective and i'm not a super confidant writer of anything. The first two shorts required the viewer to have some external knowledge of films like Twilight and Terrifier 3 to really land as intended. So this time I wanted to make the comedy as self contained as it can be. This ones for everyone, or at least I tried my best to write it that way. Some of the greatest comedies ever written stick close to what most people can relate to, Faulty Towers with its husband & wife running a business angle, IT crowd with its office antics... THE OFFICE itself! all of those are relatable character driven sitcoms. As well as referencing popculture from time to time, I need to remember that the writing will land best if it serves what people KNOW. So going forward I hope to lean into that more. and when all else fails? slapstick... Tom the cat getting hit in the face with a frying pan never fails. THE SHOPThe Voodoo Vids building itself is somewhere I want the viewer to desire to go. it's warm, inviting, filled with interesting things. It likely smells of stale coffee and hot CRT's and plastic video cases. I've seen every inch of it because I built everything in it, but the viewers haven't, So I try to get a few establishing shots in there to show the place from different angles. Getting that feeling of "I wish I could go to a place like Voodoo Vids" across more without sapping the pace. I just love strong establishing shots, combined with a nice piece of music, it sets the tone for the rest of it. There is a lot more to see inside, but we'll get to that in a future episode. SILLY VOICESI've done voice work before but for comerical purposes. Yes... I've literally been the guy that says"BUT WAIT! There's more" and I still do that, but I've wanted to get into character work for a while, so I'm using my own project as an excuse to have fun and explore that side of things too.I promise i'll get new voices in for future episodes... i'm no Hank Azaria and i'm looking forward to working with more people. SOME TECHNICAL STUFFThe Capybara world machine was fun to make BUT it was a headache at times. Between the claw rigging, and parenting to the control box, and the fricken CORD on the claw OMG... That was a fiddly thing to get looking right. A lot of trial and error but I settled on a bezier curve and used "hook to" constraints. It does the trick and that's good enough! The Capybara toy itself is a real toy, so I used my own as reference to make the model. I drew the machine artwork in Photoshop and brought it in as an image texture. and to finish off the machines aesthetics I composed its chiptune jingle using a website called "beepbox", if you want to make cool chip tunes and muck about with it, it's a great tool!I was going to model some coins for Victor to use, but I decided it was a detail I could cut to save time, and I don't think it would impact the visual impact by not having that in there. ON great tools a friend told me about WIGGLYPAINT which is the tool I used to draw the squiggly doodles of the characters in the credits. I love how fun they are. FINAL NOTEAside from my partner doing voice work and helping me recording foley sounds I'm working on the animation alone. It's tough but seeing the end result is so satisfying. And if others are enjoying it too then that's even better! Doing this lets me take on all aspects of a production and being indies, we get to just MAKE stuff without having to pass it around a boardroom for sign off on the dirt texture on the glass of the capybara machine. Thanks for the support, thank you for watching, and I look forward to hopefully making you laugh again real soon.

Voodoo Vids - #3 The Claw

Knave hopes to ask for a moment between him and Ragatha.

Knave confronts his anxiety, hoping to at least have a moment between him and Ragatha. Back in December last year (pun kinda intended), I met up with Amanda Hufford at Requiem Cafe and got them to record a little something for myself. And I loved that audio. So much that I made small little comic dub. Been working on this for a while, and I love how this came out! May be small, but I’m proud of myself for how far I managed to make this comic turn out amazing. Amanda Hufford, if you are watching this, thank you again for the audio and for the sweet meet up. You are awesome. And I hope you guys like it! At the time our background painting badass, Denise Magdale (voice of the wife in this short) was getting pretty swamped in this period of time in the pipeline knocking out backgrounds for Coop's Nightmare, the C&H point and click adventure game. There was a major concern about cutting costs by re-using backgrounds that have already been made from the get-go. I was able to get a hold of the final files, and set to work making sure everything lined up and the camera wasn't on an extreme edge of the bg that exists. I was also having difficulty with designing the doctor, and Chance Kubesh helped me out by sketching up the doctor I've recreated here. The crazy-straw sequences were incredibly fun, and the highlight for me. Not a far cry at all from some of the shenanigans experienced with Last Call. Also, because I'm a fan of Game Grumps, I had to use some Trauma Center music as temp, and it fit so well with the theme of things like sweet sweet cranberries. Directed by Connor Murphy

The 26th Cyanide & Happiness Short I've Worked On!

Because it was a little bit longer in length, I was allotted more time on it, and I decided to really up and push for more detail and smoother acting. I encountered a few challenges with the wide, full shot of all of the suspects- not only in fitting them in the enclosed width of a train car, but also to be careful not to over-act with them, because that many characters, all in custom, period-clothing doing a bunch of wacky motions and turns and stuff could raise the cost of the short. So I went as economical as possible with crowd shots. Once again, it was really therapeutic drawing slow-motion, hyper detailed still props like the knife and the brooch, and I loved playing with the acting on the Detective. Once again, I play the voice of a cop at the end (I seem to be cast as cops and dads a lot for them), and I was really pleased with how this team kicked so much ass on this one! C&H The World's Greatest Detective Animatic

The 11th short from Cyanide & Happiness I've worked on!

This is owned by Explosm Entertainment, but I drew and animated everything here! This is an animatic, not the final animation, but if you're interested in how it turned out, click here to watch Sweet Flips on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDhwT9qY9mE This one is going to feel wildly different from the final product, because both skater dudes have different voices. The director, Mike, provided temp voices for the duration of this pre-production phase, and we didn't get the lines of the two skater dudes until much later. Couple of things I tried out here, I had a lot of fun getting practiced with character facial acting with asymmetrical details. I didn't know how the huge-explosion shockwave glitching out the camera would've worked out, but it seemed to do alright. Annnd I made this into kind of a love-letter to my middle-school / high-school days by making the temp soundtrack entirely CKY. One thing that didn't quite translate in the final, I tried making the place where he's skating some kinda artsy city park thing (something I've seen at Texas Tech), where you probably wouldn't be allowed to skate on it, but in final they made it a skatepark, which was kinda confusing to fans. Another thing was, our background artist Denise played a couple of voices in this, and in one of her takes as a courtroom attendee, she makes this volumed mutter that I personally thought sounded like she was eating something. I thought it was pretty funny, so I had a courtroom attendee eat a candy-bar in time with the VO take. So when the camera moves to the defendant, and back to the crowd cheering, she's cheering with a mouthful of that same candy bar. It was kinda funny, and they decided to keep it in the animatic and go through with it to final- But then they removed her voice take because it stuck out too much, and replaced it with the sound of that court lady munching on a candy bar. It was a detail that seemed to be met with confusion by the fans, because now this lady has a mouthful of chocolate for no reason, lmao. I learned that sometimes that small of a gag might not be worth including in the future, because it can be distracting and pull attention away from the point of the actual, written joke. Jack and his animal buddies undertake a journey to a better place.

Jack, a simple scarecrow, has been protecting the farmlands for as long as he can remember. Spending most of his time sleeping and daydreaming, he is shocked when his crow friend Tony has some big news. There might actually be someone like Jack far away and Tony guarantees it's worth the journey. Accompanied by the old rabbit Roy, the three set off to see if there really is more behind the horizon. I know it has been over 2 years since i have submitted anything new. What happened? Well 2 years ago i started this project with great motivation, but somewhere halfway, after 5 months, i completely lost all motivation to draw and animate. This could have been done in 7 months or so but instead i took a 1,5 year break. I really needed it, to get away from it all for a while, to regain inspiration and motivation. I mainly focused on my study and social life and even though i made very little that period, i think i learned alot about art and animation by just watching and reading stuff. I plan to make a few smaller movies before i start working on episode 2 of this thing. This series is meant to have 5 episodes, but i sincerely hope the others won't take me 2 years each also lol. Anyway, Take care AITD
