A 3DMM project I made as an homage/parody of classic horror films

This was an old project that I did some time ago that also took me far longer to finish before that than it ever needed to take. It's nothing too complicated, I was fiddling around with 3D Movie Maker at the time, just trying to make some goofy little movies that I could use as an excuse to practice my music & get the general feel of animating. The music in this project was all made using the Korg DS-10 Synthesizer software for the Nintendo DS of all things (the tracks were transferred to my PC from a New 2DS XL via the headphone jack), but with a little bit of spicing up in Virtual DJ. The inter-title graphics were largely inspired by classic German Expressionist films of the silent era and the story was meant to feel tongue-in-cheek, like a cute little parody of old black & white mad scientist flicks: Absurd experiment that makes little sense goes horribly wrong and someone gets their ironic comeuppance. For the most part, as a way to challenge myself and to learn the ins & outs of 3DMM, I stuck with the stock assets & actors; the only mod I used was a green screen mod for some of the close-up shots. I have thought about returning to doing more 3DMM projects, but have struggled a lot with ideas and how many fan-made mods I'd want to use. I felt with this project at least, most of the originality would come from the music & intertitles, hopefully that's enough. For those interested, you can also check out the original upload over on YouTube. And you can also download/buy the EP of the music for this video, as well as my other original tunes (some of which I've also published here) over at my BandCamp. Last but not least, you can support me even further on Ko-Fi, and if you have ideas or requests for more 3DMM projects like this one, I'd love to hear them.

Music by Armin Jusuframić, performed 2025, https://arminjmusic.com/Thank you so much for this fantastic dark ambient reinterpretation! The original version of this comic-animatic was drafted around 2010. Dead Space was the game that motivated me to buy my first proper gaming computer back in the 2010s.Back then, during a gaming party with some friends, one of them introduced us to Dead Space which he played in his Xbox 360. I was Blown away. I was unaware of the advancements in horror gaming and loved the immersive environment and creature designs. So I started saving for both a custom gaming computer from a small PC building business(a Rig which would also serve me for art and design) and a physical copy at an Office Depot (I didn't know of Steam until the sequel came out). While I was setting apart the money to buy my gaming rig, thanks to the immense hype and anticipation I started drawing the original version of this comic. This scenario was drawn thanks to the lore that my friend who owned the game at the time, told us while he was playing, and I also listened to the lullaby posted here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpYz4EQVo1w&list=RDbpYz4EQVo1w&start_radio=1, Something to note is that, prior to drafting the original version I didn't see the marketing trailer, I didn't watch other gameplays or youtube videos, I didn't check the Wikia, and the character references for drawing were scarce on the internet. As you see that version was left incomplete. I was lacking some art skills, and the figures and books from the game were not very available in my country until much, much later. I got my PC and my game and forgot about it for a long while. I picked up this fan art piece, after many years as it was a fun exercise in graphic narrative, and now I learned a bit of extra skills to properly finish comics. For the storytelling, I took inspiration from the Lullaby and used the lyrics as symbolisms to narrate the sequence within these pages. This is the tought process and break-down of the panels you see: Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star (glowing eyes)How I wonder what you are (a lifeform, a necromorph)Up above the world so high (necromorph falls from the ceiling)Like a diamond in the sky (Necromorph's glowing eye+ The Miner looking up)When the blazing sun is gone, (Sun=Miner's life)When the nothing shines upon, (Darkness=Miner's death)Then you show your little light (Little light=Infector's Proboscis, sign of reincarnation/life, tunnel of light while dying or near death)Twinkle, twinkle, all the night. (All the night=Time Passing, transformation ongoing, preparing to return to life as a new form) Then the traveler in the dark, (Isaac)Thanks you for your little spark, (living monster=uncleared area )He could not see which way to go, (path unexplored, exit level is near)If you did not twinkle so. (if Isaac didn't find a living Necromorph) When the blazing sun is gone, (Marker blocks sunlight)When the nothing shines upon, (Darkness=Marker is the source of the nightmare)Though I know not what you are, (the necromorph looming behind)Twinkle, twinkle, little star. (necromorph glowing eyes, little star= a lifeform) I haven't checked newest sources or lore expansion to see if what I "saw" in the lyrics was accurate to the story's representation XD. But still, wanted to finish this. Thanks so much for watching! I hope to get/play the reboot and buy its artbook soon!

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

The Russian Bat ExperimentDuring the Cold War, Soviet scientists in Magadan began experiments weaponizing nature itself. They wanted to spread deadly viruses over enemy borders using small animals as carriers. The laboratory-made viruses were so potent that they killed most animals instantly, which presented a logical challenge for the scientists... to find a vector that could survive the virus when humans could not. They decided to try vampire bats. These were ideal creatures because they were accustomed to feasting on the blood of diseased and dead animals and had natural immunity to some of the manufactured viruses’ deadliest features.Unfortunately, these tropical bats could not survive the brutal Russian winter, even in a controlled environment. The project stalled until they could breed a new type of resilient vampire bat. One with thick fur, a robust constitution, and an increased blood storage capacity. Augmented by Pleistocene gene splicing and radiation exposure, the scientists produced twelve abnormally large vampire bats suitable for the toughest climates. Despite their size and density, when they were injected with the deadly virus these genetic monsters withered and died. All except one. A very special bat. This test subject was much larger than the others. Perhaps that is why he could endure the deadly chemicals injected into his veins. His oily wings were heavy and the thick leather membrane squeaked when he splayed his clawed fingers. His belly was swollen and he breathed in long, loud gasps. Most horrifying of all and unlike any bat every recorded, this creature could speak. He called himself HUGO.The scientists, terrified yet driven by the overmastering spell of discovery, attempted to train Hugo. They spoke to him and taught him the rudiments of reading and writing. In time, he could carry a conversation with his “hosts” as he called them. When he performed his tasks well he was rewarded with blood that was drawn from political prisoners in the Gulag and stored in huge vats. Hugo drank, and drank, and drank. The more blood he took in, the more he needed. He demanded more and refused to cooperate with the training regimen. Eventually he reversed the scientists’ role. Instead of rewarding him with blood when he performed to their expectations, he had trained them to provide blood in exchange for compliance. When he was interrogated by intelligence officials about his creators Hugo laughed, and in a guttural voice, sticky and wet, he called the researchers “little meat packets.”Once, when looking at a picture of the night sky, Hugo spoke his true mind. He wanted to be set free from the laboratory so he might “taste all the kinds of blood in the world.” “Let me fly,” he Demanded in tone that hinted of mockery and threat. “You keep me here. You deprive me. You starve me.”The overseers of the project had condemned the project long before. The plans to disperse viruses through animal vectors was deemed unreasonably dangerous. They had only allowed Hugo to exist thus far out of sheer, horrified curiosity. Despite the scientific opportunities such a creature presented, authorities commanded Hugo’s termination. An execution squad armed with rifles marched into the laboratory with orders to arrest the scientists and destroy all evidence of their abominable work. But they were too late. The entire research staff was dead. They lay curled in contorted positions, drained, shrink wrapped in their own pallid skin and collapsing inward like emptied sacks. Hugo had vanished, but before he left he had scrawled with the tip of his claw on the outside of the facility... “Fresh blood tastes best.”Reports arrived two days later from the nearest Gulag. All of the prisoners and guards were reduced to leathery husks. Not a single drop of blood remained in their veins. Victims were found all along the so-called “Road of Bones”, the path Hugo had taken on his way into the heartland of Russia. Then, suddenly, in the deep cold of winter, the killings stopped. The rampage ended.Few records survived the purges, but one NKVD memo marked “Not for Distribution” declared the “Experiment was Contained.” Decades passed in relative silence. Rumors were squashed with ridicule. Families of the decedents were paid off or threatened into silence. “Hugo” became a boogeyman to frighten unruly children. That was, until two years ago when a derelict fishing trawler was found on Turkey’s Black Sea coast. Inside, every crewman was dead. Pale, their veins collapsed, drained of blood. Their skeletons were wrapped in dry skin, twisted into positions of eternal agony. Only one piece of evidence hinted at the cause. Scratched into the rusted iron hull of the ship were the words:“Hugo is Famished”.......................... Spread this creepypasta far and wide! Hugo the Bat is a new webcomic with a 160 page graphic novel already available for purchase. This was made and Animated in Blender, rendered using the cycles (Ray Traced Graphics) renderer into an EXR sequence (instead of jpeg, png, or a video file), then brought into Davinci Resolve to be color corrected for HDR under the Rec. 2020 color space for output on 1000 nit HDR screens. Yes, that's a lot of technobabble, but it provided me with quite the learning experience. It also goes to show how picky YouTube is with its HDR content, but how does Newgrounds faire? Not bad, it seems.

VFX done using Trapcode by Red Giant in Adobe After Effects CC 2019. It's a LOOP! A year ago I did THIS Motion Graphics Animation of my Fursona:
https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/707213 To me, I tend to view motion graphics as more basic and simple, but despite that they can get VERY complex, and time consuming. It's basically a still picture that has elements in it that moves such as VFX, but some of those can get rather advanced in technique. I was still consider this more on the basic to intermediate end. It was very difficult, frustrating, and stressful to try and figure these things out since 2016. But, I just kept at it. When I was at UMASS Boston so many professionals had no idea how to do these things, even tho' in theory it ought to be simple. Adobe also doesn't make it fool-proof, and doesn't exactly teach this stuff either, which I found strange because this style is not even new whatsoever. I'm glad to get on with these things and see my progress since last year. Last year, I wanted to understand particles fully, and even tho' I can comprehend them somewhat now, I'm not a master of any of it. 3D software is a big issue of contention for me because it destroyed my entire career field at exactly the time period I graduated from animation/film/art school in 2001 even tho' traditional animation had just been peaking in the market, and Japanese traditional animation took off even further. But, I also value VFX, Filmmaking, and editing software which is much better than those old analogue video editing machines and VHS or BETA decks. I see no reason why I can't use 3D elements, VFX such as particles, parallaxing, camera movements, 3D environments, 3D digital cameras, 3D vectors, or 2D vectors in a fusion of hand made art together. I also see no reason why it's acceptable for computers, machines, and software, ought to replace art and artists. I find this unacceptable. This piece of artwork was drawn by hand with a pencil on paper and scanned, then cleaned & painted/colored in Adobe Photoshop. The Motion Graphics animation + compositing was done in After Effects, and the final edit was cleaned & reworked in Adobe Premiere. I also use Adobe's Media Encoder to render out my videos because I find the codecs stay more consistent that way in the final result. It's not as noticeable in the newer versions of Creative Cloud, but it's still there. Anyways, THIS was VERY FIRST project this year, and my VERY FIRST actual original project using Trapcode! ^,^ I was SO EXCITED to even get Trapcode back in November! My older work usually did NOT have so much slowness, or stillness, or downtempo and even ambientness as the things I had done at the end of the 20th Century, and the beginnings of the 21st Century. So, THAT alone was a significant challenge for me, since I'd usually been such a hyper person, and prone to dynamic or flamboyant styles. But, in order to learn these things I needed to try and learn how to create things that were not fast paced, but slow, and more calm. VERY difficult for me. Often these motion graphics projects are a way to experiment, subjectively, things like mood, emotive feelings, but also the software and allowing it to be the tool, and NOT the art. I also do the audio design as well.
