The 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. animated!

This animation is a sequel to my very first hand-drawn animation. This time around, I used a Huion drawing tablet instead of drawing with purely a mouse. The quality is quite a bit different . . . maybe I'll need to remake the first at some point . . . Check out the original animation here, if you haven't seen it yet: Super Mario Over the Years! 1 - Unfortunately, you'll have to watch it on YT because I didn't have a NG account back then :( Isn't it technically the 41st now of Super Mario Bros?: Lol, yes - this project is a culmination of short vids I've been putting out during the 40th anniversary across my socials, plus a bunch more! I still wanted to call this an animation for the 40th, as it's the bigger milestone year than the 41st. I also just work slowly, and had a bunch of ideas, causing the release time to continuously get pushed back. Art Direction I've had the thought for quite some time to make a more faithful animation to the Mario series to emulate and honor the stylistic choices of Yōichi Kotabe and Shigehisa Nakaue. My decision on the art direction also came down to me wanting to "understand the generations of Mario” from its official art standpoint. Furthermore, I wanted to embellish some of Mario's movements, not limited to the games, to give a greater sense of action and adventure! I referenced all types of official cover art, licensed activity books, instruction manuals, classic 80s/90s commercials and other promotional material for the games and time periods. It took way more effort than my past simpler, often rough character animations - but it was totally worth it! For later games in the franchise, including games like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Odyssey Characters, I choose to fuse the official render designs with the linework used in the manual art in the earlier games. I wanted the animation to have the hand drawn feel, but still have the evolution of Mario's design aimed to hit several of the "key poses" from the Super Mario Bros official art, and “bring them to life” in the animation. In order to execute this idea, I started with several of the key frames as these key poses, with some adjustments (like eye movements, hand placements, or perspective tweaks) to flow with the animation. As far as the backgrounds go, they involve a stylistic approach to Shigehisa Nakaue's work on the fairly consistent Nintendo summer artwork. I tried to simulate this by blending some watercolor texture scans I painted with digital watercolor brushes created in Photoshop to create laying and show a brush stroke on a more rough, coarse paper. The color usage references the internal colors displayed when playing the games on their respective consoles. This challenged me when it came to using a very monochromatic color scheme in Super Mario Land's Birabuto dungeon to quite the opposite of using a wide array of color in Mario's character animation in the Super Mario Odyssey segment. Easter Eggs Woah, you actually read up to this point? Okay, well, I'll let you in on a little secret: this animation is jam packed with a ton of hidden secrets/collectables. Try to spot the following:

Bosses and/or friendly side characters from each game

References to different Nintendo game console generations

5 cherries to give you "invincibility"

2 wonder seeds for a "sense of curiosity"

Franchise game/console codenames

A bunch of coins. Count all of them if you dare and they may reveal some meaningful Mario number lol . . . The following are variations of coins and values associated with them (does their final value mean anything?):

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀◦ Regular/Gold Coin - Simply 1 Coin⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀◦ Red Coin (SM64) - 1 Red Coin = 2 Coins⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀◦ Blue Coin (SM64) - 1 Blue Coin = 5 Coins⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀◦ Purple Regional Coin (SMO) - 1 Regional Coin = 2 Coins Credits Music in chronological order:0:00 ~ Super Mario Bros 2. - Ground Theme ~ Super Smash Bros. Nocteon is a planet bathed in eternal night skies with ruins of a long forgotten civilization scattered through its valleys. Somehow, the flora of this planet is sustained well with its absence of a sun, yet despite this wonder, whatever intelligent life had lived here has since moved on. As a Pathfinder, it was once your goal to survey planets of interest like this. However, since the 'decommission of service' these kind of planets always seem to find their way to your travels. A video game concept I dreamed of creating one day, where the main character embarks on a journey of a cosmic scale! Exploring many crazy and impossible worlds, running on cosmic roads connected to an infinite sky! / This is the second scene for my conceptual project "RAIDHO". It was created using Blender for blocking out shapes and perspective, Procreate for the illustration and Adobe After Effects for a simple parallax animation.

Waking up trashed and fatally damaged in a world he doesn’t recognise. ‘Sonar’ has lost his memories of the events prior, with only an inner voice that's not his own, guiding him to a path of recovery and answers. Some reflecting in the middle of the night.

I felt a little inspired by the recent full moon. I wanted to mess with the compositor in Blender a little bit and I found out you can make an object glow that way. Made a short animation to go with the Moon. I tried to do some forced perspective with the terrain but it's kind of just meh. I do think I have gotten better at making a character walk though.

VA : VelvetLily, Macromancer This is an abandoned long animation from 2024-2025. I only animated one third of the whole thing, so it's half animatic, half animated. At that time, I had a vision for the project, but ironically, I lacked perspective on its scope. And in hindisght, I realize how ridiculously ambitious this was.I ended up animating one third and got burned out of it. I'm still proud of it though.

(Warning: Loud/harsh sounds in video) Have you ever found the love between GF and BF weird? A rapper dude appears out of nowhere, and a very passive girl falls in blind love. We know little about them, especially as a couple. This short video series aims to tell almost the same story, but from a completely different perspective. This work was made back in February, but only in May I finally have free time to do the first part...pheeew thank y'all for waiting! Music used: 1.Disclaimer sound: Криминальная Россия - Повествование2. Rick Astley - Together Forever (midi cover by "The Musician") Both of them are not copirated in YT system, so I really dunno should I change it. A short film about a captain who underestimates a monster. An animation exercise

Few parts of the animation were surprisingly challenging. The ocean movement and waves were fun to animate, but the boat shots required a bit more thought. Since the boat is drawn in 2D and not a real 3D object, rotating and changing angles had to be done manually to keep the illusion working. For example, when the boat tilts and the camera angle changes, I had to adjust the drawing so it feels like the boat is turning in space, even though it's really just a flat drawing. The top-down shot of the boat was also tricky. As the camera pulls away, the captain had to look upward toward the viewer, and the cabin needed a slight backward tilt. In the real world you would naturally see a bit more of the top surfaces when the camera moves farther away, so I had to fake that perspective shift in 2D. Interestingly, the sea monster itself wasn't the hardest part. The most challenging bit was actually the water splash when the monster emerges from the ocean. Getting the motion of the water to feel energetic and believable took a lot more tweaking than I expected.Everything in this animation was created using Arttista, a 2D illustration and animation tool that I built myself. I've been using projects like this to experiment with different animation workflows and features while developing it. Before there were AI boyfriends, there were OC boyfriends.

*insert obligatory gen ai take from the perspective of an artist in the form of content here* This is a real stylistic departure for me, but I'm trying something new. The world’s changing (as it does) and with all the convos surrounding gen ai and the security of creative jobs, I’ve sort have felt compelled (ambushed really) to show the human behind my art. Started working on this last November, but (as always) it took longer than expected to complete. Anyway, this is the intro to a longer video I just uploaded to YouTube. The full video is mostly live action with comedic illustrations thrown in so I didn't think it would be appropriate to upload it in its entirety here. If you're curious— https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ-wwXh3Zyg

An extended scene after the True Pacifist ending. Someone's missing from the story.

UNDERTALE is a lovely, fun little game. For a long time, I've had Chara's journey on my mind. While they are the most absent from the game, their presence and influence is strong. Chara, much like Asriel, was just a child. They hated themselves much like Asriel did when he became a flower. What would they have thought? We never get to see their perspective in the true pacifist route... I wrote a rough draft of this months ago, but I wanted to turn this into footage. I made the custom sprites for it, but I'm not good enough in GameMaker to make my own system. I also did not want to do it in the one programming language I'm familiar with that could replicate the look of UNDERTALE, Scratch. With Phi's help, this is now a reality. A strange video that came from a strange idea.

SE VOCÊ FALA PORTUGUÊS, HÁ UMA VERSÃO EM PORTUGUÊS(BR) DISPONÍVEL. The English version ended up being much worse than I imagined. I had to make some scenes unnecessarily long to fit the structure of the Brazilian Portuguese version (which I did first), and my English is quite bad. Sorry about that. One of my drawings received complaints for being "suggestive," and it made me so sad that I created a court to judge the art. I couldn't let my friends judge because they wouldn't be impartial… (and because I don't have any friends…) so I let an AI do the judging with all the characters being cats.(But don't worry, the AI made such a loose script that I had to rewrite everything; the only thing that remained was the bizarre final punishment decision the judge gave… It was such a bizarre decision that I decided to make this video because I thought it would be funny)Yeah, I know... I would like to thank the Newgrounds community for giving this animation of mine a front page trophy! But there is someone else I would like to thank. This person works really hard to be an active member of the Newgrounds community and I feel like he makes this place better. He has even personally helped me by giving me some tips on how to use Krita, Thank you so much NothanyTPM for everything, including vouching for Take Over Tuesdays and your very thoughtful comments on my works! I would like to give a shout out to him and his art! If you could leave a comment to show love to a fellow artist that is so kind to the community, it would make me very happy 💮 Here are some works of his that capture my attention[ Baking a cake drawing ][ Snow drawing with many characters ][ Beautiful mountain painting ][ Lamp drawing with an interesting perspective ] and this one is very impressive[ Very smooth cleaning up animation ] ----Other than that I am also thankful to my patrons for supporting what I do, The animation is very short so I didn't put them in the end. The keyframes and breakdowns are already done, I just need the in-betweens to finish the first part of the video. Here's a sneak peek. To be super honest, this perspective was a real pain, especially …

Here is what is probably my first fully "handdrawn" animation.

TrouserToons - The Mouse

A starship pilot intercepts an unwanted arrival headed to the frozen planet.

Meet Kat, a star ship pilot, spending her days on duty at an outpost on a frozen planet. After receiving an alert, she heads out to intercept an unwanted arrival. After the first Fallen Star, I wanted to jump right back in and go again! I wanted a much quicker turn around this time. In order to speed up I chose to create something that uses as many assets as possible from the first FS. So, how about seeing the story told from the perspective of the pink ship? That way I get to use the ships, backgrounds and SE. I did have to create a load of new stuff too though which was a ton of fun. If you missed the first one and need some context for the video, check it out here: Again, Music by the fantastic Kapuko and SE from freesound.org. (Hopefully I have a better mix this time. Still learning). Finally, if you like what you see and want to support me in creating more animations and fun projects, you can help out over on Ko-Fi.ko-fi.com/njcorden I hope you enjoy. Thank you for watching.

I just found out that I messed something up in Holly's perspective.
