Face painting is when paint is applied to a character's face. This is commonly done at festivals, carnivals and other celebrations. However, it may have a more ritual intent.
Characters who commonly have facepaint are children (perhaps on Halloween or a carnival), tribal warriors preparing for battle, or fanciful decoration. It may also be part of a culture, such as a Japanese geisha's make up, or Native American war paint. These may be hard to tell apart from facial tattoos, or natural markings. Frequently seen styles of facepaint:
- Skull Face Paint - Wherein the face is painted to resemble a skull. Said face paint may also resemble a sugar skull and in that case, is connected to the Day of the Dead festival.
- Simply, often brightly colored lines and shapes intended for decoration
- Dark smudges intended to act as camouflage
- Horizontal stripes below the eyes that help reduce glare, often seen on characters playing sports.
- Mask-like shapes across the eyes
