Originally founded in 1985 by Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki, and Hayao Miyazaki after the success of NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind (1984; it's retroactively considered to be a Studio Ghibli film), their first film was Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986), which was directed by Miyazaki and produced by Takahata. The bulk of their output involves one or both men in some fashion. The studio is also famous for its fairly strict "no cuts" stance, due to their horror at how badly NausicaƤ had been butchered in localisation. From 1996 to 2017, Disney distributed Studio Ghibli films in North America; GKIDS is their current NA distributor (and had been used to release some of Ghibli's more controversial/experimental output from 2011-2017).
