Description

SCP-686 is an infectious substance from the mythos of the SCP Foundation website. Its debut story, SCP-686 — Infectious Lactation, was posted in May 2009 by the author BeeDee.
SCP-686 is an infectious form of milk visibly indistinguishable from high-grade dairy product. Chemical analysis proves it has an above average vitamin content and contains several, complex, unidentified proteins, though no signs of nucleic acids or prions. The paranormal effects from consumption is neutralized by pasteurization processes.
If a mammal drinks unpasteurized SCP-686, breast growth and lactation of more SCP-686 will be permanently induced regardless of biological sex. Severity will remain minimal if the infected is regularly milked once every eight hours, with a stable human producing between half or a whole liter of SCP-686 daily. If milking is neglected or excessive, mammary glands will continue to develop in the victim, potentially worsening into supernumerary breasts. In the severest of cases, this will result in the breasts unifying into a single udder spanning the front of the victim's torso.
The nutritional requirements for the milk produced by an SCP-686 victim is proportionate; humans with severe infection suffer drastic change in personality and diet, becoming physically and mentally overwhelmed by the expenditure of producing upwards of forty liters of milk daily. Infection by SCP-686 is permanent. Even if a victim undergoes a complete mastectomy, eventually new mammary tissue will differentiate and multiply, continuing SCP-686 production.
SCP-686 was discovered at a dairy farm when the cattle carrying SCP-686 infection, after two years of increasing production rates, experienced a zoonotic shift to humans. It is unknown if SCP-686 arose from a mutation in these cattle during their tenure at the farm, or if they had contracted it from an outside source.
