The ace of spades is a card used in a deck of playing_cards. It is sometimes known as the "death card". The single spade on this card is traditionally larger and more ornate than the corresponding symbols on the other three aces. This is due to 17th century English laws requiring this card to bear the insignia of the printing house which made the cards. Although these laws are no longer in effect, playing card manufacturers have maintained the tradition, and some aces of spades have even received design patents.
