In Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a person who has attained, or is striving towards, bodhi ('awakening', 'enlightenment') or Buddhahood.
However the term also refers to a person who forgoes or delays their own personal nirvana in order to compassionately help other individuals reach Buddhahood first. Bodhisattvas can be differenciated from buddhas in art because a buddha is always depicted in simple monk's robes and without ornamentation to represent their renunciation, while a bodhisattva is typically portrayed with ornate clothing, jewelry, and a crown, like a royal figure to portray their ties and duty to the material world. The term buddha is sometimes used interchangeably.
