Description
Cleyran
Cleyrans are a race of anthropomorphic rats in Final Fantasy IX who inhabit Cleyra, a giant tree surrounded by a constant sandstorm. They share a biological and cultural heritage with the neighboring Burmecians, but were separated by a feud hundreds of years past. Where the Japanese refers to both Cleyans and Burmecians are "nezumi", the English prefers to refer to them by their nationality, though the game's villains occasionally use the term "rats" as a derogatory term.
As related in-game, the Cleyrans' ancestors disagreed with the expanding militarism of Burmecia, and feared being dragged into a war by their brethren. A separatist group left Burmecia and founded a new city in a giant tree to the west. In spite of this feud, the two nations are on reasonably good terms.
Where Burmecians are typically seen in armor and filling military roles, Cleyrans dress more as priests and priestesses, adorned in either heavy robes or light, ornate costumes that offer flexibility for dancing.
The art of dancing is important to both Cleyrans and Burmecians, and Cleyrans use the power of mystic dances to maintain and reinforce the sandstorm surrounding their adopted home.
