Description
The Colorado Avalanche is a professional hockey team sanctioned by the NHL. Their team colors are blue, maroon, and gray. Their logo is a stylized A in an oval, with a puck crossing the bridge of the letter. Their mascot is Bernie the St. Bernard, who replaced the original Yeti mascot Howler, who existed from 1995 until 2001. Their home arena is Bally Arena, located in Denver, Colorado, USA, with whom they share the Denver Nuggets of the NBA. Their head coach is Jared Bednar, the second longest-tenured coach of any team in the NHL, and their captain is Gabriel Landeskog.
Originally founded as the Quebec Nordiques of the WHA or World Hockey Association, they relocated at the end of the 1994-95 season, after being eliminated by the New York Rangers in six games, due to financial struggles. During the WHA days, they won one Avco Cup, and played in the Colisée de Quebec for their duration.
Upon relocation to Denver, they won a Stanley Cup the following season in 1996. They have won two more since then, in 1999-2000 and 2021-2022. Their honored players are Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Milan Hejdok, Patrick Roy, Adam Foote, and Raymond Bourque.
