Description
A deerstalker is a type of cap that is typically worn in rural areas, often for hunting, especially deer stalking. Because of the cap's popular association with Sherlock Holmes, it has become stereotypical headgear for a detective, especially in comical drawings or cartoons along with farcical plays and films. Interestingly, the deerstalker wasn't associated with Sherlock Holmes until Basil Rathbone played him in fourteen films from 1939 to 1946. Ever the fashionable city man, turn-of-the-century Holmes wouldn't have been caught dead wearing a country fashion accessory in the city. On a couple of occasions when he ventured out of London to the countryside, Holmes was described as wearing a hat that fits the description of a deerstalker, but he wore a top hat or a bowler while in the city.
