Description
The incising of a design into a hard, usually flat surface by cutting grooves into it with a burin or a similar tool. This can be for its own sake, or in producing intaglio printmaking plates to print such works. It should not be confused with etching, another intaglio printmaking process that uses acid to burn a design into the unprotected areas of a plate covered in a hard, waxy ground, although the techniques are often combined.
