Description
The term Geek is used to describe individuals who demonstrate a great expertise, enthusiasm, or obsession towards topics/trends that are generally considered fringe, obscure, dissonant, or non-mainstream.
The term comes from English dialect geek or geck (meaning a "fool" or "freak"; from Middle Low German Geck).
However, as time has gone on many things that were once exclusively associated with Geek Culture have become more and more integrated with mainstream pop culture. Historical topics that only Geeks would have been interested in includes:
- Science Fiction
- Fantasy Book Series
- Comic Books
- Computers & Programming
- Video Games
- Anime/Manga
- Indie Art
- Trading Card Games
- Tabletop Roleplaying Games
- Cosplay
- Collecting
- Fandom (Especially the Furry Fandom)
- New Technology
Because most people have a healthy interest in at least one of those things in the modern world, negative depictions and treatment of geeks has become less prevalent in modern media and the world without specifically setting the media in a time period before 2000.
