Description
Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is a series of open world action-adventure video games developed by Rockstar Games that take place in satires of American cities (although the real life British city of London was featured in an early expansion pack for the first game) where players play as a criminal who gets involved in the criminal underworld. The games usually take place in one of three main fictional areas that have been around since the first game:
- Liberty City – Based on New York City, with nearby New Jersey fictionalized as the state of Alderney. It is the setting of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Advance, Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto IV (and its Episodes from Liberty City expansions, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony), and Chinatown Wars.
- Vice City – Based on Miami. It was located initially in-universe in the actual State of Florida where Miami is in real life. Grand Theft Auto VI retconned the state to be a fictional Florida-based state called Leonida. It is the setting of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vice City Stories, and the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI.
- San Andreas – Based on San Francisco in the first game and later becomes a fictional state based on California and parts of Nevada. In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, it is divided between Los Angeles-based Los Santos, San Francisco-based San Fierro, and Las Vegas-based Las Venturas, along with surrounding rural areas. In Grand Theft Auto V, it is just Los Santos to the south and the rural Blaine County (based on several counties adjacent to Los Angeles County) to the north. It is the setting of the aforementioned San Andreas and V, along with the latter's online multiplayer counterpart Grand Theft Auto Online.
