A front-entry sex position where one character lays on their back while parting their legs to allow another character to penetrate them face-to-face. Also tagged for non-penetrative sex done in this position, such as grinding and tribadism.

Both characters should be lying down, or at least in generally horizontal position. If the top is kneeling or standing, anvil position or table lotus position is usually more appropriate.

Note that although missionary position is used to refer to a wide variety of positions outside of e621, here it specifically refers to the vanilla missionary. Other types have their own position tags that should be used instead.

Missionary variants

These positions are related to missionary in some way, but not all should be tagged as missionary.

Compatible variants

There may be exceptions, but it is generally okay for these tags to be used alongside the `missionary` tag.

eagle_position – A spread legs variant that often features the legs tucked back towards the chest. It is easy to confuse with anvil and victory positions when it involves kneeling.
wrapped_missionary_position – Missionary position featuring the bottom's legs wrapped around the penetrating partner.

Incompatible variants

Incompatible variants should not be used alongside the `missionary` tag. These are not examples of vanilla missionary.

anvil_position – Kneeling missionary variant. Does not overlap with this position.
mating_press – Mating press positions are a grey area. It might be a compatible missionary variant, as it doesn't violate any of the requirements of missionary, but some components may be drawn out of view.
platform_missionary_position – A table lotus variant that involves sex on two differently leveled surfaces.
reverse_missionary_position – The penetrating partner is lying on their back instead.
bent_spoon_position – both partners on their back with the penetrating partner on the bottom.
sideway_missionary_position / side_entry_missionary – These two terms refer to two unusual missionary variants requiring either twisted-entry, or at least one character lying on their sides.
victory_position – Kneeling missionary variant. Does not overlap with this position.
