A straitjacket (also spelled straightjacket) is a long-sleeved bondage garment historically used for patients in mental asylums to minimize the risk of harm against themselves or others. Now generally considered harmful and ineffective, straitjackets are rarely used except as props for escape artists or BDSM.
Straitjackets are typically white and constructed from a strong fabric such as canvas. They function by tightly restraining the patient's arms (usually in front of the body) with straps connected to the sleeves. The head and legs remain unrestricted.
