Description
The Phantom of the Opera (French: Le Fantôme de l'Opéra) is a novel (first published as a serialisation) by French writer Gaston Leroux about a deformed man named Erik who haunts a Parisian opera house. He tutors and falls in love with a Swedish singer named Christine Daaé, who herself becomes engaged with her childhood friend Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny.
The novel has received many adaptations, most notably in the form of a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber that premiered in 1986 that continues to run in London's West End and New York's Broadway to this day. The musical itself received a film adaptation of its own in 2004 as well as a sequel musical called Love Never Dies that premiered in West End in 2010.
