Description
The Varia Suit is an upgrade to the Power Suit worn by Samus Aran in the Metroid series. Most commonly featuring two lights on the chestplate, large, ball-shaped shoulder pauldrons, and orange coloring on top of the yellow base, the Varia Suit is Samus' most iconic suit design. It increases the Power Suit's overall defense and insulates the wearer from extreme heat, but certain hazards like lava or poisoned water will breach this defense. Like many upgrades in the Metroid series, this suit tends to be lost at the beginning of most games it features in and is reacquired later.
The name "Varia" is a mistranslation of the word "barrier," which is in reference to the suit's shielding capabilities. The manual for Metroid II: Return of Samus lists the correct translation, though the mistranslated name is used in the majority of Metroid games.
