Exploring 4 emblematic paintings from belgium artist, Rene Magritte

Explorations is a collection of 4 emblematic works of Rene Magritte, recreated with current technology and the power of 3D modeling and animation. Starting with

Sheherazade, Rene Magritte (1947)

'Sheherezade is the name given to the pearl-woman object in memory of The Thousand and One Nights' (Magritte, quoted in D. Sylvester & S. Whitfield, René Magritte, Catalogue raisonné, vol. II, Oil paintings and objects, 1931-1948, Antwerp, 1993, p. 387). Shéhérazade appears to have been painted in May 1947 and is considered to be one of the earliest pictures to feature one of René Magritte's iconic motifs, the pearl woman. This picture shows the woman, whose mouth and eyes are shown as islands of flesh surrounded by a mysterious framework of strings of pearls, against a backdrop of a sky hewn out of monumental arches of blue. Next to her on the tabletop are two tall pyramids, a glass of water and a thick, claret-coloured curtain. This manages both to invoke the tradition of the Old Masters of Magritte's native Belgium and also to create an intimacy, a domesticity, a normality, lulling the viewer into a false sense of security that is prised apart by the mirage-like vision of the woman who so bracingly stares out from the canvas like some Orientalist incarnation of the Cheshire Cat. She is some form of apparition, perhaps conjured by the rituals of which the pyramids and water may be the paraphernalia. At the same time, she is the alluring and ornate hostess introducing the viewer to a world that has been rearranged in order to reveal its infinite wonder.

The Liberator, Rene Magritte (1947)

'The Liberator' presents a mysterious scene likely intended to provoke thought and curiosity. It depicts a figure seated against a surreal backdrop of floating architectural structures, with soft clouds embedded within. The figure, shrouded in a red cloak and adorned with a straw hat, lacks a discernible face; instead, there are symbolic images such as a key, a wine glass, a bird, and a pipe on a blank canvas where the torso should be. The enigmatic character holds a peculiar wand-like object topped with a bouquet of facial features and eyes. The figure’s attire and the walking stick it holds suggest a sense of journey or pilgrimage, while the suitcase placed by its side further emphasizes this theme. The overall composition resonates with Magritte’s distinctive style, blending reality with dreamlike elements to challenge perceptions and evoke deeper interpretations.

The Rights of Man, Rene Magritte (1947)

In 1948, while musing on the purpose of the titles he assigned to his paintings, René Magritte proclaimed: “I think the best title for a picture is a poetic one. In other words, a title consistent with the more or less lively emotion we feel when we look at the picture”. Across a series of handwritten manuscripts—now preserved in the Archives of Contemporary Art in Belgium and collectively known as “On Titles”— the artist offered a collection of short statements on some of his recent work. Among these brief notes, Magritte wrote about Les droits de l’homme: "Here, man is reminded of his right to act on objects and change the world"

The Annuntiation, Rene Magritte (1930)

The Annunciation brings together many of the themes, both iconographic and philosophical, that engaged Magritte during his stay in Paris from 1927 to 1930, a period in which he was closely associated with the French Surrealists. The painting shows an unlikely combination of objects. Two large bilboquets (Magritte's term for the objects in his works, which, though imaginary, recall wooden balustrades or chess-pieces) stand next to an oddly shaped piece of paper with a decorative cut-out pattern. Behind them looms a grey metal 'curtain', hung with sleigh bells. Despite its incongruity, this collection of objects seems disconcertingly 'at home' in the rock-strewn landscape beneath the grey clouds in the blue sky. The size of the painting (it is one of the largest the artist ever executed), together with its traditional composition and subtle allusions to paintings of Old Master like Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, and Caravaggio, are signs of the ambitiousness of the work.

Carl Vermont - L'Appel de la forêt (Official Muci Video)

"L'Appel de la forêt" is the 2nd single taken from Carl Vermont's 6-track EP to be released in early 2023, "Or sky color rain". An energizing electro pop gem with French disco accents, this track continues to develop the artist's poetic signature and surreal universe, through the grace of freshly contagious melodies & chiseled guitars. The accompanying animation clip, mixing paper collage, pixel art, stop motion, modeling clay, 2D animation and... lego, is produced by the visual artist Shawy Animation, already multi-award winning internationally. with “My Window”. https://www.youtube.com/shawyanimationhttps://www.instagram.com/shawy.animation/

The Fox and the Mirrior
::Full-animated-Short::
:Not Animated in Flash:: Behold I have completed it! The first Creation Warrior Production!
After 3 months I can finally show off my short film “The Fox and the Mirrior.” I did it because I am currently attending CalArts and every year we are expected to make a short film. I Have to say the people in the department are the most hard working insane awesome people before. I am just one of the individuals who accomplish this great feet every year. It’s Awesome! Only now can I appreciate the amount of work that goes into hand drawn animation. So much work for such a short thing. But it means so much! Now I feel like I can accomplish anything! About:
Title: The Fox and the Mirrior Length: 1:48 sec (25 shots) File Type: currently crappy 3 meg swf (looping) Created with: Pencils lots of pencils, Mostly with my trusty mechanical pencil with .5 HB high-polymer lead(man it killed my hand) but also a lot with Crete-color Monolith and Tombo HB drafting pencils. All on “12 field” animation paper, (about 14” by 12”) I tested the animation on a “lunch box system.” I then scanned it in using Animation Stand and put the drawings in order in After Effects then Edited all the shots (27 of them) together with Final Cut Pro. The only place Flash had was in out putting it for the web. Other than that nothing was done in that program. All Drawn! Crap! Death Toll: Some 1600 drawings over three months, average of 3 to 12 hours strait work a day (yes this is true!) and many, many sleepless nights. This isn’t all just drawing I also had to plan it out x-sheet it, scan it, compose it and output it. Well for every second there needs to be 24 frames I drew about 24 -12 frames for every second...yeah just do the math. “The Fox and the Mirrior © copyright 2005 Margaret (Razi) "Creation Warrior" Mathison and Creation Warrior Productions, creation_warrior.com@hotmail.com [link] You can also view it here:

[link] Answered Questions: Music: I go the music from one of my friends who had it around I heard it and I just had to use it. I think however it was done by Dead Poetic. Gender?: The fox is actually female. I wanted it to kind of come across without being weird. But really she is just a fox. Were you Helped? : I did it all on my own Don't understand it?: Yeah I ran out of time and was unable to complete like 5 shots...Maybe I'll upload the storyboards for those shots so people can see the whole thing. Meaning?: Yeah it's more of just a piece that expresses in an abstract way my emotions. The butterfly is supposed to be kind of the dream, what the fox wants...It's supposed to represent desire. The Mirrior (Yes Mirrior) is just supposed to show our worse enemy, ourselves. The fox is me because I am well a fox . How long have you been animating?: I've been at CalArts 1 year and this is my first animation.
