Description

Clams are bivalves characterised by commonly burying themselves in soft substrate (such as sand or mud) by means of digger "foot".
Their shells are mostly symmetrical, being either smooth or marked with grooves. They also may vary in shape, being compact, elliptical, rectangular; and rarely more wavy rather than symmetrical (giant clams).
A typical characteristic of clams is the presence of developed siphons, which promotes water circulation. They may sometimes be seen poking out of the shell or emerging from the ground if the creature is buried.
