Description

Oysters are bivalves characterised by their tendency of being fixed to a solid substrate (such as rocks or piers).

Their shells commonly are very corrugated, irregular and even asymmentrical; in rare cases they may also be covered with spikes.

A characteristic commonly related to oysters is the capability of producing pearls exhibited by some species, however this may a little misleading reganding artistic representations, since some tend to link this characteristic to other bivalves as well.
