A clown is a type of comic performer who aims to entertain an audience, often employing slapstick humor. They are somewhat similar to mimes. The most common depiction of a clown is recognised by an outlandish costume featuring distinctive makeup, exaggerated footwear, a colorful wig, and prominent brightly-colored nose. This is most commonly red, but can be any color. Modern clowns are strongly associated with the tradition of the circus clown, which developed out of earlier comedic roles in theatre or Varieté shows during the 19th to mid 20th centuries.
The psychological fear of clowns is known as coulrophobia.
Clowns are also popular villains in the horror genre, where their negative aspects are more prominent and played up for the sake of drama.
