The lake guardians (Japanese: 湖みずうみの神かみ々がみ Mizūmi no Kamigami, "lake gods") are a trio of Legendary Pokémon consisting of Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf. They are a group that reside in the Sinnoh region, and were first discovered when the region was known as Hisui.
They are known as the pokémon of the lakes in the core series games and the pokémon Adventures manga, and have also been referred to as the Lake trio, lake pokémon, and guardian deities (distinct from Alola's guardian deities). A blog by Junichi Masuda referred to them as the UMA combo (Japanese: UMAユーエムエーコンビ Yū-emu-ē konbi, "UMA Combination"), which some Japanese fans reference with the name UMA Trio (Japanese: UMAユーエムエートリオ Yū-emu-ē Torio).
As creations of Arceus, they represent knowledge, emotion, and willpower respectively. They can keep either Dialga or Palkia (two Pokémon of myth, the rulers of time and space) in balance, but they cannot do this against both at the same time. It is also implied that the lake guardians cannot do the same with Giratina. According to Junichi Masuda, the lake guardians collectively represent spirit while Dialga and Palkia represent substance.
