Description

The molars or molar teeth are large, flat teeth at the back of the mouth. They are more developed in mammals.

They are used primarily to grind food during chewing.

While in many cases the molars are flat, some mammal species who have adapted to a carnivorous diet can have molars that are sharp or more pointed in shape to help them tear apart meat, called carnassials. These include (but are not limited to) species in the canidae and felidae families.
