Experimental surreal eye- short

This animation has loosely been in the works for nearly 4 years. Largely on the back burner, to pick up between other projects.

In late 2022 I came up with the concept, and in 2023 did some rough draft key frame story boards.

Then for practice did a 5-10 frame animated blink to get a feel for frame rate.

This year was progressively working on this version. For only being 20 seconds long, it to an insane amount of time and effort. Felt like I was going mad drawing the same patch of grey 100 times, then starting back for another patch.

At the start of the year I worked on the black and the eye color. The rest rest has been sculpting the face with grey. Ending with an attempt at making background music last weekend.

There’s still some things that bother me, but those skills will grow with more practice I think.

I’m very happy to be finishing in October- best month.

Big thanks to hazyjai, for support and encouragement through the whole process.

inspiration:

I used to really like the art on tool album covers as a kid, the concept was vaguely inspired by Ænima. Lava lamps, inspired the movement.

hiccups:

about halfway through this year, my animation file got corrupted. I definitely panicked, but thankfully there was a way to recover some of it. Maybe missing the most recent few days of work, but not all lost. Both a relief and a bit discouraging in one. Definitely switching to a real animation software for the next one. Too many limitations and I don’t want to risk that happening again.

When I finally felt ready to upload, ran into issues too. Some stretching and distortion. The video is smaller now, but I believe that’s fixed.

I've wanted to animate for a very long time. I’m happy to finally be taking those steps.
