The first episodes I ever worked on for Cyanide & Happiness, 2015

Thus marks the beginning of the end of my animatic uploads, as I dive into episode segments that I've worked on for the Cyanide & Happiness Show. There's layers to the delays on this! I actually initially assembled this very .fla file while I was in the studio facing layoffs for the first time, and I was let go before I could complete it. Now that I've recovered my work hard drive, I can pick up where I left off archiving my work, and my history with Explosm. At the time that I was assigned to work on Bill Brass, I was brand-spanking new at this whole thing. I had made an audition for them, then they gave me a scenario to test what I could do, and then they assigned me a couple of promo's to animatic for the show. One of which was of a stickman swallowing the camera, and we enter through his esophagus and out his asshole where he had the "Cyanide & Happiness Show: Season Too!" logo at the ready by his buttcheeks. The other promo, which was more involved, was this brief little ad.. These were my functional tests to see if I could keep up with feedback and deadlines. With the ads complete, Season Too was getting ready to wrap up, so they tacked me onto the Bob Ross segment of "Too Many Cops" and all over the place in "Too Much History" I struggled for a little bit with getting clear imagery up for some shots in the "Ghost of History's Past" segment, so Beth Del Rosario stepped up and helped me out, because she's incredible at what she does. She saved my ass a lot through Season Three, Purgatony, and she knocks out all of her work in very quick order. I will always feel bad about like not "getting it" fast enough to the point that others needed to dive in and help me out. That's the kinda guilt that makes me want to improve so that doesn't happen again, but as embarrassed as I was that I NEEDED help, I am equally grateful that the Explosm team could help when they were able. They didn't let me drown, and based on what I've been hearing from other creative gigs with other studios, it makes it seem like that's a rare grace in the industry. Because there's been such a gap between this part's assembly and the next part, expect there to be some changes when the Part 2 goes up. This'll wrap up the "Too Much History" Episode, and that'd be it for Season Too. Then, I got a couple of segments from Season Three to upload. A few things from Season Four. And then the only animatics that'll be left are the more recent shorts that I've been working on as a contractor from this year! But I'm trying to get this old stuff archived. It's just one less thing left to do before I move onto newer, more colorful, more original, less stick-figury, more challenging-to-make content that's more my own. More for you! Not blueprints from bygone eras. Stay tuned, and thanks for watching! I thought the idea was hilarious, and I made it a personal challenge to keep her consistently on one third of the screen for most of it. The temp track "Valse Moderne" (which I found by looking up Ren & Stimpy music) was perfect and only needed very light editing to get it to hit the beat when she kisses. The Puffy Piffle was named so because "Piffle" was a weird placeholder expletive my mom would say as I was a kid. "Oh piffle!" and I thought it sounded silly, so I gave the boat a silly name. I went ham on the fighter pilot's flight suit because I'm a nerd for fighter jets. I actually voice three characters in this- the fat guy near the beginning, I'm one of the "m'lady m'lady m'lady" voices on the boat alongside Mike Salcedo, and I'm the incel at the end "She's not even that hot anyway - tch, unbelievable." I also lightly traced the environment at the end based on the French Riviera. That about wraps it on shorts that I can upload at the moment! I'm going to switch my focus to animatics from The Cyanide & Happiness Show, which if you haven't watched it before, it's great. It gets better and better after every season, and this newest one which I've been working my ass off on, is about to drop in September this year. Like I've mentioned before, I love doing creepy shit, so making the oppressively lit farm road and dramatic lighting with the car and the headlights and such was a joy. I loved the dragging chainsaw shot and the show where the headlights illuminate him and he gives that little head tilt. Mike made slight adjustments on this animatic, including the rate of the car POV zoom-in, and the timing for how he waits for a beat, then simply walks around to the side of the car. Mike also added the text to Bill's narration talking about the car, but everything else was me working out my problems into a flash about murder, lmfao. Since this is a direct sequel (or aligned with Don't Talk) they let my horror-font be the splash image again, and I'm super proud of that. They also kept my fake car company logo pretty much intact for the final version! I made that up on the fly. Directed by Mike Salcedo

I PULVERIZED the audioscape with Gundam references, in sound effects for the time machine and using a track from the 08th MS Team as temp music. Seemed like dire, doomy sci-fi music and fitting for the theme. There used to be a scene between the kid's shocked expression upon learning he's him from the future and the "Now gimme all those cookies" turnaround, where the music got all sad and piano-keyed as the time-traveler pleaded and begged him to not take the cookies and turn his life around, "You have to believe me...Please!" before procuring his gun and delivering his line "Now gimme all those cookies." At the time, I liked the mood-swingy nature of him, because he looked like a crazy person to me, but I agree it was a good idea to cut it out. I loved the time-travelers design- I can't remember if he was custom made for the short or if he was a model re-used from something we've done before, but I was told to specifically design him that way. The time machine I made up on the fly, it's pretty much just a futuristic phone booth, lol. I got the bowling-ball hole designs from 80s-90s animes I grew up watching as a kid and snuck them into his bionic eye to make it look even more futuristic. Directed By: Connor Murphy

The 14th Cyanide & Happiness Short I've worked on!

This is owned by Explosm Entertainment, but I drew and animated everything here! This is an animatic, not the final animation, but if you're interested in how it turned out, click here to watch Good Dog on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LC3_hHiXgSA This one was special to me because it was my return to shorts after what felt like a lifetime away from them. All of the shorts I've submitted so far took place in the tail-end of 2015 and into 2016. For the rest of that year, I was busting ass with the rest of the team on Season 3 of the Cyanide & Happiness show. I'll be sure to post those animatics after I've gone through this list of shorts first, but it was a challenging experience that really helped form me as a professional. I grew and learned a lot from it. Immediately after Season 3 of the show, I was also assigned to work on a show from Explosm called Purgatony. It was a refreshing change of pace from the usual stick figures that we drew, but the deadlines were extremely intensive. No fault of anyone's at Explosm, it was specifically for a weird streaming service called "Blackpill" which kept dragging their feet signing the contract while the deadline didn't move...it's a wonder those guys aren't in business anymore. Having just come off from the pressure of season 3, and now into an even more intensive project, I was suffering burnout like crazy. I worked on the introduction sequence to Purgatony and the first four episodes, before I was mercifully put back onto shorts while two animators hopped on to help out with the rest of the season. At the time it was a saving grace, and I had a sour opinion about Purgatony because of the stress, but in hindsight, it was actually a really fun project to work on. I'm happy that I got to try something new, and looking back on it, I really grew and matured because of it. As I type this, Explosm finally got the rights back to Purgatony, and they're releasing it on Youtube for free. After two years, seeing how the final product came out (apparently the French animation studio had tight deadlines too) it came out pretty good! The first episode is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocBEaoW5okc So Good Dog, which I think was completed around March of 2017, was an opportunity to return to form. Producers were quick to point out that I had been over-detailing animatics in the past, so sometimes, throughout Season 3, I would revert to what I called "Redline" which was a loose approximation to how a character should look. It was meant to be fast and sloppy. Some of that exists here, and the entirety of the dog is bluelined because I wasn't sure what design they were going to go for. There was uncertainty if there was an existing dog rig they could re-use for the short, but Jerald, our character designer, wound up creating a dog based on what I drew here. I went to Space Camp as a kid and I've always been stoked about NASA and space shuttles and the like, so I went ham on the ship design, wreckage, interior layout, and what-not. It is a cartoon so it's supposed to be silly- and that's why I initially went with visualizing that the space is leaking in exactly like water like the Captain fears it's behaving. But they opted to go with nothingness, like actual space, which is probably for the better because when you're talking about animating water, that shit's a nightmare. I had a ton of fun with sound effects...the first of many shorts where I snuck in Gundam sfx as a signature easter egg. I also had a lot of fun with the temp music, sampling Ace Combat and the trailer theme for Interstellar. Directed by Mike Salcedo

First of all, I loved the script, I loved the idea, I loved everything about this short. It also introduced me to the amazingly talented voice actor Hunter Scott, and Godswill Ugwa. Two extremely wholesome and positive individuals who are playing characters that are among the more foul-mouthed and rudest people in the C&H universe will never not be funny to me. I tried my best to match-cut every transition so his head remained stationary in the same 1/3rd of the screen, but certain shots benefited from switching it up a little. This was really Mike Salcedo's baby and I'm proud to have worked on it. Only thing I can really point out is there were just a couple of subtle character acting moments I gave Rudy in the animatic that didn't translate to final cut. Like when he's having dinner with his then-girlfriend, "Independent woman, big-tittied" he's kinda checking her out like "Hell yeah" in the animatic, but in the final animation he seems to be squinting like he can't quite see her tits? There's just really little bitty insignificant changes throughout the final animation that I was just like "what, why did it read like that" but...oh well. Rudy is still funny as hell and one of my proudest shorts that I've worked on. Directed by Mike Salcedo
