The 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. animated!

This animation is a sequel to my very first hand-drawn animation. This time around, I used a Huion drawing tablet instead of drawing with purely a mouse. The quality is quite a bit different . . . maybe I'll need to remake the first at some point . . . Check out the original animation here, if you haven't seen it yet: Super Mario Over the Years! 1 - Unfortunately, you'll have to watch it on YT because I didn't have a NG account back then :( Isn't it technically the 41st now of Super Mario Bros?: Lol, yes - this project is a culmination of short vids I've been putting out during the 40th anniversary across my socials, plus a bunch more! I still wanted to call this an animation for the 40th, as it's the bigger milestone year than the 41st. I also just work slowly, and had a bunch of ideas, causing the release time to continuously get pushed back. Art Direction I've had the thought for quite some time to make a more faithful animation to the Mario series to emulate and honor the stylistic choices of Yōichi Kotabe and Shigehisa Nakaue. My decision on the art direction also came down to me wanting to "understand the generations of Mario” from its official art standpoint. Furthermore, I wanted to embellish some of Mario's movements, not limited to the games, to give a greater sense of action and adventure! I referenced all types of official cover art, licensed activity books, instruction manuals, classic 80s/90s commercials and other promotional material for the games and time periods. It took way more effort than my past simpler, often rough character animations - but it was totally worth it! For later games in the franchise, including games like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Odyssey Characters, I choose to fuse the official render designs with the linework used in the manual art in the earlier games. I wanted the animation to have the hand drawn feel, but still have the evolution of Mario's design aimed to hit several of the "key poses" from the Super Mario Bros official art, and “bring them to life” in the animation. In order to execute this idea, I started with several of the key frames as these key poses, with some adjustments (like eye movements, hand placements, or perspective tweaks) to flow with the animation. As far as the backgrounds go, they involve a stylistic approach to Shigehisa Nakaue's work on the fairly consistent Nintendo summer artwork. I tried to simulate this by blending some watercolor texture scans I painted with digital watercolor brushes created in Photoshop to create laying and show a brush stroke on a more rough, coarse paper. The color usage references the internal colors displayed when playing the games on their respective consoles. This challenged me when it came to using a very monochromatic color scheme in Super Mario Land's Birabuto dungeon to quite the opposite of using a wide array of color in Mario's character animation in the Super Mario Odyssey segment. Easter Eggs Woah, you actually read up to this point? Okay, well, I'll let you in on a little secret: this animation is jam packed with a ton of hidden secrets/collectables. Try to spot the following:

Bosses and/or friendly side characters from each game

References to different Nintendo game console generations

5 cherries to give you "invincibility"

2 wonder seeds for a "sense of curiosity"

Franchise game/console codenames

A bunch of coins. Count all of them if you dare and they may reveal some meaningful Mario number lol . . . The following are variations of coins and values associated with them (does their final value mean anything?):

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀◦ Regular/Gold Coin - Simply 1 Coin⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀◦ Red Coin (SM64) - 1 Red Coin = 2 Coins⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀◦ Blue Coin (SM64) - 1 Blue Coin = 5 Coins⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀◦ Purple Regional Coin (SMO) - 1 Regional Coin = 2 Coins Credits Music in chronological order:0:00 ~ Super Mario Bros 2. - Ground Theme ~ Super Smash Bros. Franklin finds something odd in the storeroom

VOODOO VIDS EPISODE 4: IN BRUCE WE TRUST Episode 4 is upon us and I hope you enjoy it! I'm aware that many people may not have seen the original Evil Dead movie. And you don't need to have seen it to have some fun in this episode, but there are a lot of references here that are connected to the Evil Dead series. If you want some more context before watching, maybe check out the last edition of the Spooky Zine. ABOUT THE SPOOKY ZINEThe spooky zine is a once a month mini mag that explores some more of the local lore and connects with the episodes and world of voodoo vids in a way that's external to the animation. They are a bit of fun, but also can contain wider context for viewers that want to have some additional context. Or maybe you just want to read more about what's happening in the wider universe. A LOVE LETTER TO EVIL DEADThis episode is a love letter to Evil Dead and nods to the horror classic in certain ways I hope you would find nostalgic and at the same time, perhaps encourage some new people to seek out The Evil dead movies if you haven't seen them. You have to have a passion for old school splatter gore horror. But it's got a great blend of gore and comic styled over the top supernatural elements that are sure to delight, and Bruce Campbell is just brilliant as Ash Williams. I'm super excited to learn that there are rumors Bruce may even return to the movies in some capacity. I know currently Bruce is battling cancer, which is awful news, but as he said himself, "Fear not, I am a tough old son-of-a-bitch".I along with many fans are wishing him a good battle and hope he gets well soon! I'd love to see him on the big screen in Evil Dead again! Beyond this point there will be episode 4 spoilers so return to read the rest after you've seen the episode. BEHIND THE SCENES OF EPISODE 4This episode took a lot longer to make than the others, I hope that shows and also thank you for your patience. The script went through a few re writes and last minute changes that extended the runtime. Having every character in a single episode comes with more challenges, making sure to give each of them a good scene. But I think it was worth it as if you like any character in particular they are all present in this one. THAT ICONIC INTROIf you are familiar with Evil Dead you will have noticed I did my best to pay homage to the opener from Evil Dead 2 that explains the Necronomicon's origins. Making that was so much fun, animating the front cover of the book, combining it with some stock footage of an ocean that I tinted red, and for the "ink effect" on the page reveals I used some simple track mattes of real ink drop footage to do that. I love how it turned out.I also did the narration in the intro, I rearranged elements of the original script to work better with the set up for this parody. My goal was to allow people who've never heard of, or watched Evil dead to get up to speed as quickly as possible with the idea that "this book is bad news" TECHNICAL STUFFOne of the biggest challenges is creating new environments and props. Something you see on screen for a few seconds in a few shots has had to be created from scratch. Some times I over engineer stuff too and I probably could've made the chainsaw without an actually animated chain... but because I did, It allowed me to get some cool camera angles of it in action. Same can be said for the shotgun that Franklin is using. it is based of the same model they used in Evil Dead 2, the original film Ash used a single barreled Winchester, but the sequel it was a 12 guage double barrel Stevens model, and later in the 3rd movie it was a double barrel Stoeger Coach Gun, which is lovingly referred to now as "The Boomstick"Ash famously saws the barrel off in Evil Dead 2. Of course I needed a forest. Not any easy set to build but I made it easy by cutting a lot of corners, the whole forest set is just a simple plane with a particle system placing tree images randomly across the surface.I made it within an hour and the lighting is doing most of the heavy lifting. which is again fairly simple. I like my renders to not take AGES. Most of the animation scenes take about 4-5 seconds per frame. So the forest was as basic as it needed to be. Paul's date cutaway was another external set that required a suburban feel to it. so I modeled some simple houses and kept camera angles to a minimum and focused only on what I needed. it was a very short scene so keeping the set small was important... but I could probably use it again in future should the need arise.Voodoo Vids itself as a set is the biggest and most detailed because I wanted a space where I can point the camera pretty much anywhere and have a great shot. A lot of time was spent on that, but it still needs work and more will come to the set eventually. Another huge time save has been using multiple cameras within the same scene and swapping between them. traditionally I would've worked on one scene per camera shot, but using Blenders camera marker system I can have multiple cameras that I can cut to whenever I need. so I can animate the whole scene in one blend file. This also makes it easier to alter small parts or fix things in post easier without having to dig through a load of different scene files. MUFFINMuffin the Dog was referenced in the Spooky Zine and fun fact, he is voiced by our own dog Podrick. Recording his various noises is fun. To get his taco crunching sounds we used a Poppadom, he very much enjoys working with us when there's food involved. The next two episodes will probably be a little shorter again too not keep the gaps too long between them. AND for the finale there's going to be another great addition to the page that you can all experience and join in. more on that soon.We may even see some more new characters too!! FINAL NOTEThank you all for watching and a special thanks to Bruce Campbell and Director Sam Raimi for making a bonkers horror franchise that inspires fans and creators still to this day.As for Voodoo Vids please share it if you can, tell people about It! Your support is greatly appreciated with every like, vote, comment. It will be available on youtube next week, right now they remain as Newgrounds exclusives at launch. If you want to know anything else about production or things I've not mentioned here, then please ask. more than happy to answer any questions.See you in the next one! and look out for the next edition of the Spooky Zine for some more info soon!

Firecracker Headshot!

So it was like 2023 (yes this took a long time mostly because my day job got in the way and when I'm too tired I just sit and play really long 4x games) and I was getting back into making my own cartoons again. I was talking to a co-worker at my day job about how he would go to a shisha bar with friends and they decided he smoked too much and used that as an excuse to ditch him and the one guy was smoking a cigar. I was like 'ehh lets base it very loosely on the essence of that but do something different to try and push myself before I get to writing my web series 🤡 ' and I came up with this idea of comparing different types of smoking. It wasn't even necessarily meant to be all that straightforwardly funny but as it went and I was desperate to move on to other projects jokes just kind of emerged from going stir crazy or hiding shortcuts because it was taking too long. I actually really enjoyed designing these guys and they're definitely showing up again, the tall guy was not iterated at all and was exactly how I wanted him to look right away. All the voices I just mimicked from other Australian YouTube shit I liked over the years (see if you can guess them!) because they just fit the specific type of dude I was imagining and this was originally not going to be a big thing but something I put out in a few months that wasn't just something I had to throw together for a jam. God I'm so happy this is out of my brain and people can stop asking if I 'still make cartoons?' for a while before I inevitably make a project way too big again. LMAO. Tried some editing tricks I learned doing a lot of live action editing the last few years too and I think I did okay on that front, a few things compositionally that I'd change but that's for next time, there's a point where you just have to finish and move on. I still have a lot to learn about sound design though, I really want future soundscapes to be a lot richer and to really figure out how balancing works. I regret never having the time to do the classes available when I was doing my masters at film school but I had so much editing to do back then I needed all that time to put docos and short films together. Fuck even my description is taking way too long I just kind of lived this thing forever. Got more cool shit planned for the future! Hope you like xoxoxoxoEDIT: DAILY THIRD!? THANK YOU GUYSSO MUCH!

First day on the job? Dealing with the mob? At least your boss isn't a slob.

@PukeBomb presents their short film debut...EVERYTHING MUST GOJack Brandt, an unemployed early 30s “bachelor,” is putting in a whopping 56% effort to land any possible position he can get his grubby fingers on. Although he leaves room for improvement, Jack meanders his way across town searching for jobs before stumbling over his own unlaced shoes and a “helpe wontid” sign in front of a dilapidated store front. Haphazardly shuffling inside, Jack was not ready for the marvelous misadventures on which he was soon to embark. Following a series of inexplicable sounds, Jack encounters what one can only describe as the physical embodiment of rotting meat and left-on-the-counter cream cheese, Mark Pimento. He's the kind of guy that could possibly be working for the mob whilst also predicting your future. You know that one uncle of yours that shows up with a stained shirt and unkempt hair right at the most in-opportune time for a "quick visit?" Yeah, that's Mark. Unreasonably sweaty, oozing a questionable fragrance of fast food delicacies, this mythical “salesman” offers countless wares to his loyal, yet displaced customers. Marky Mark acts as the CEO of Pimento Planet™, a thrift-like store that offers luxury washing machine alcoves, -568.56 °R circumscribed cooling, ancient antiquities, and edible arrangements such as off-brand ice pops. Do me a favor: think of one item you definitely do not need right now, nor will you ever require said item. Okay, you good? Yeah, Pimento Planet™ has 40 of them in stock. Our love-able, wide-mouthed dope of a shopkeeper proudly represents a long line of Pimentos before him, continuing their seemingly endless hoarding legacies. Not all is well, however, as Mark is having it "up-to-here" in dealing with expectations from his "sponsors," the nefarious Maf-AI. Perhaps a break from this endless cycle of trash is in the midst. The Maf-AI are a rough-and-rowdy rag-tag group of artificially intelligent mobsters viciously scaling the chain of power to soon control all facets of our earthly plain. As their leader is VERY displeased with Mark's recent transgressions, a gaggle of their top goons are contracted to target Mark in the hopes of clearing their path towards destruction. Unfortunately for Mark, he's a bit busy giving an expansive tour of the Pimento Planet™ facility to realize what his "future" holds. Many questions still remain. Who is Psychic Bob? Why haven't I heard of that unreleased vinyl record? Who needs that many socks? But, most importantly: Will Mark slip further into his biologically destined downward spiral, or burst out from the flames of failure? Oh, and whose dog is that? 2nd Place Winner in Live Action Jam 2023 CASTMark Pimento - Graeme Barrett (AudioOpera)Jack Brandt - DNSLMafAI Boss - Nick SennyMafAI Goons - VoicesByCorey / JoshDytonVO / Nick SennyNews Anchor - NattosumiMeatloaf - Cyclone BreitmayerJeremy Clarkson - NattosumiRichard Hammond - Nick SennyJerry Socks - Bro-sonPsychic Bob Voice - Nick SennyLive Action Psychic Bob - Bro-sonMark Pimento’s Sultry Mouth - Nick SennyLive Action Mark Pimento - Nick Rahm / Hayden GrahamLive Action Jack Brandt - Nick Senny ANIMATIONPimento Animation - Nick SennyJack Animation - NattosumiTop Gear Animation - SepticSebiJerry Socks Animation - Bro-son3D Animation - Bro-son BACKGROUNDSNick SennyNattosumi EDITING / SOUND DESIGNNick Senny MUSIC"Dispose Me" - BUFFOUT"Road Rage Symphony" - Cyclone Breitmayer"Bad Whether - Green Sky Mix" - Nobey One"Fantajoyeux" - Pillowinde FOOTAGELive Action Jack Brandt - Nick SennyLive Action Mark Pimento - Nattosumi / Bro-sonPsychic Bob - Bro-sonMark V Vehicle - autoalfred In Loving Memory of Meatloaf & Dixie You can support PukeBomb on Patreon to become a "PukePatron" or "PukePal."We supply behind the scenes images / videos / concepts / updates of our works in progress. The "PukePatron" tier gets you the above posts and a thank you in the video description, but update to be a "PukePal" and be forever etched in history within the actual video's credits. What teaching aliens about Sonic the Hedgehog in the future will be like

I worked on this for a couple days. I really wanted to play with spring bones and this was a cool way to do that. I used iphone face mocap for the aliens. I have used mocap where I precisely linked up the face but I really wanted only vaguely lip syncing action. I almost considered just having them just jiggle to talk. This also gave me a chance to push eevee a little bit in blender. I was under the impression that eevee couldn't do subsurface stuff but it totally can. You can see subsurface work in the glow from lights inside the aliens. I modeled everything except the notebook and pens (Those objects and the textures for the whole world come from my Poliigon license). I really wanted the boring notebook so there was some realism. I actually spent some time dreaming up alien pens but it didn't ground the piece. The music and background noise are from storyblocks and licensed through there. I also was amazed at how well camera settings still worked in eevee. Because of the lack of certain light stuff I didn't think I could use rack focusing on light sources as affectively as I did. From a writing stand point: fuck sonic, am i right? I also actively had to restrain from drawing more bad sonic. It's sooo fun to draw sonic badly. I basically would look at a real official sonic art and then make every mistake I normally make my head do when drawing. So if I saw a hand I would normally figure out the orientation of the thumbs and fingers but I just wouldn't and so on. It was really great. I may make more bad sonic art. I am exclusively putting this animation on Newgrounds. I really wanted to make something like Egoraptor had done on here but updated and worthy of this site and I hope everyone likes it. Anyway, you can blame @Crawdad for this, I didn't intend to enter the Live Action Jam (or indeed EVERYTHING on …
